How we process it

• Table 1 of the destination and origin workbook read, both sexes, men and women, for every country and area.
• Origins kept as published: countries, the unallocated “Others”, and areas the site has no entity for (the Channel Islands as one area), so every destination still adds up to its total. This is checked for every destination and year.
• The kind of data of each destination is kept: country of birth or citizenship, and whether refugees are included.

Known limitations

• A migrant stock counts people living abroad at mid-year, not journeys or yearly flows.
• Countries count migrants by country of birth or by citizenship, which gives different numbers. The page says which one each country uses.
• For many countries the latest figures are estimates carried forward from older censuses.
