Indicators and units

IndicatorUnitRefers to
Human Development Indexindex from 0 to 1The calendar year

How we process it

  • The complete time series downloaded from the UNDP data center. A new release replaces the whole series, because UNDP recalculates past years with each report.
  • Countries matched to the UN countries and areas by ISO code. Regional and group averages are left out.

Known limitations

  • The index is a summary of three dimensions and hides differences within a country.
  • Values for past years can change from one report to the next, so only one release is used at a time.
  • UNDP covers 193 countries. Many territories have no index.
