How to use this tool

  1. 1Enter your birth year. Add your birthday for a slightly finer answer.
  2. 2Choose a country to compare it with the world.
  3. 3Move the year to see the answer in the past or in the projected future.

How it works

The comparison uses the United Nations population estimates and projections by single year of age on 1 January of the chosen year (World Population Prospects 2024).

On 1 January, the people of one completed age were all born in the same calendar year, to within one day. So younger than you means born after your birth year, older means born before it, and the same age means born in the same year.

With your exact birthday, the people born later in your birth year count as younger. The calculation assumes that births are spread evenly over the year.

The oldest group is 100 and over. Its ages are not separated, so for someone born more than 100 years before the chosen date the answer is a range.

Values from 2024 on are projections.

Frequently asked questions

Is this my exact rank among everyone alive?

No. It is the share of people born in later and earlier years, from modelled UN figures. No source counts every person by birthday, so the result is a close approximation, not a rank.

Why 1 January?

The UN publishes the population by single year of age for 1 January. On that date each age matches one birth year, which makes a comparison by birth year exact.

Is my birthday sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs in your browser. If you accept usage statistics, only the birth year is counted, never the day and month.

Why is the share so different in my country?

Countries have very different age structures. Where many children are born, most people are young, so the same birth year is older than a larger share of the population.
