How to use this tool

  1. 1Choose up to three countries or regions.
  2. 2Pick the year, and a second year to measure the change from.
  3. 3Choose what the small charts show.

How it works

All values come from the United Nations World Population Prospects 2024, so every country uses the same methods and the same year. Population, median age and the share of older people refer to 1 July or 1 January as labelled, births, growth, fertility and life expectancy to the calendar year.

The small charts share one scale, so a taller line really is a larger number. Projected years after 2023 are dashed.

For counts, changes are shown in people and percent. For rates and shares, the change is shown in the unit itself or in percentage points.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the world line look so different?

The world is the total of all countries, so for counts it is far larger. For rates, ages and shares it is an average weighted by population, and it sits between the countries.

What is the share of people aged 65 and over?

The people aged 65 and over as a share of the whole population on 1 January. It is a simple measure of how old a population is.

Can I compare regions?

Yes. The six regions of the UN and the world can be chosen like countries.
