How it works

Each bar is the number of men or women of one completed age on 1 January of the year, from the United Nations World Population Prospects 2024. The top bar is everyone aged 100 and over.

The axis stays the same for all years, so growth and decline show as bars getting longer or shorter. You can fit the axis to each year instead, which shows the shape better.

Your birth year is marked as the age it has on 1 January of each year. Generation bands use the Pew Research Center years.

From 2024 on the bars are projections, shown hatched.

Frequently asked questions

Why is it called a pyramid?

When many children are born and fewer people reach old age, each age group is smaller than the one below it, and the chart has the shape of a pyramid. In many countries today it looks more like a column or a vase.

Why are there more women at old ages?

In almost every country women live longer than men on average, so they outnumber men among the oldest people.

What do the dents in a pyramid mean?

A smaller group at some age usually comes from fewer births in those years, for example during a war or an economic crisis, or from people of that age moving away.
