How we process it

  • Every page of the World Bank API read for six indicators, with each indicator’s own licence (CC BY 4.0) and producer.
  • Countries kept apart from regional and income aggregates, and matched to the UN countries and areas by ISO code.
  • Only years with a published value stored, each with the year it was observed. A missing year stays missing, it is never filled in.

Known limitations

  • Countries report in different years, so the latest value can be several years old. The year is always shown with it.
  • Literacy is measured in censuses and surveys, often years apart, and partly self-reported.
  • The World Bank names a few areas differently from the UN, and the Channel Islands appear as one area there, Jersey and Guernsey as two in the UN data.
