Births through time
How many people are born and how many die each year, and how births, deaths and migration add up to the change in population.
In 2026, the UN projects 133 million births and 63.6 million deaths worldwide, a natural increase of 68.9 million.

How it works
Births and deaths are totals over a calendar year, from the UN World Population Prospects 2024. From 2024 on they are projections in the UN medium variant, drawn dashed.
Natural change is births minus deaths. Net migration is the people who moved in minus those who moved out. Together they make the change in population: for the World, net migration is zero, so the change is births minus deaths.
All figures come from one release, so they add up: the change in population equals natural change plus net migration, to within rounding.
Frequently asked questions
How many babies are born in the world each year?
The answer at the top gives this year’s UN figure. Pick any year from 1950 to 2100 in the tool.
Why can a population grow while deaths outnumber births?
When more people move in than leave, net migration can make up for natural decrease, and the population still grows.
