Longevity

How long people live on average, at birth and at every age, by country, sex and year, and what share of people reach later ages.

By the UN’s projected death rates of 2026, life expectancy at birth in the world is 73.8 years: 76.4 for women and 71.2 for men. People aged 65 live on average another 18.0 years.

How to use this tool

  1. 1Choose a place and, if you like, women or men.
  2. 2Enter an age to see the average remaining years at that age and the chance of reaching 70, 80, 90 and 100.
  3. 3Move the year to see how longevity changed since 1950, and compare survival curves of two years.

How it works

All values come from the complete life tables of the UN World Population Prospects 2024, by single year of age. Years from 2024 on use projected death rates.

These are period measures. Life expectancy at an age is the average number of further years people of that age would live if the death rates of one year stayed the same for the rest of their lives. Death rates keep changing, so it is a summary of one year, not a forecast for anyone.

The chance of reaching a later age is the number of survivors at that age divided by the survivors at the starting age, in the same table. Remaining life expectancy at an age is not life expectancy at birth minus that age: people who have reached an age have already survived the risks before it.

Frequently asked questions

Why is life expectancy at 65 plus 65 more than life expectancy at birth?

Life expectancy at birth includes everyone who dies young. People who reach 65 have survived those years, so on average they reach an older age than the newborn average.

Is this how long I will live?

No. It describes the death rates of one year across a whole population. It is not a prediction for a person and not medical information.
