How it works
Each dot stands for the same number of people, shown in the legend. The dots stand in a column above each country, youngest at the bottom, so the chosen ages light up as a band. Dots are abstract symbols: they do not show where in a country people live.
Dots are given to countries in proportion to their population, so all dots add up to the world total. Countries are shaded by the share of their population in the chosen ages.
All numbers come from the United Nations World Population Prospects 2024, population on 1 January by single year of age. From 2024 on they are projections.
The table below the globe lists the same numbers for every country, for screen readers, keyboards and anyone who prefers a table.
Frequently asked questions
Why are some countries so tall?
The height of a column is proportional to the country’s population. India and China each have more than 1.4 billion people, so their columns are the tallest.
Do the dots show where people live?
No. The dots are placed above the middle of each country only to count people. A map of where people live would need a population density map, which this globe does not use.
The globe is slow on my phone. What can I do?
Choose a lighter quality in the view or in Settings. The numbers and the controls are the same at every quality, only the number of dots changes.
